Article: Birdlife International

Birdlife International, established in 1922 under the name International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP), is a global partnership of national organisations focused on the protection of birds and their habitats. It has Partner organisations in more than hundred states (each country represented by one organisation). The BirdLife International strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources.

By focusing on birds, and sites and habitats on which they depend, BirdLife International Partnership is working to improve the quality of life for birds, for other wildlife (biodiversity) and for people.

BirdLife´s long-term aims are to:

  • prevent the extinction of any bird species
  • maintain and where possible improve the conservation status of all bird species
  • conserve and where appropriate improve the conservation status of all bird species
  • conserve and where appropriate improve and enlarge sites and habitats important for birds
  • help, through birds, to conserve biodiversity and to improve the quality of people´s lives
  • integrate bird conservation into sustaining people´s livelihoods.

Birdlife International strives to make the world a better place for birds and in so doing aims to improve the quality of life for people. The needs of birds and people are basically the same - a healthy environment in which the use of natural resources is sustainable.
